ESCA Care — Radar Presence Sensor

A radar sensor that tracks where people are in a room in three dimensions — without cameras, and without sending images anywhere.

Overview

ESCA Care is our own sensor product: a radar-based device that detects and tracks the position of people inside a room in 3D, with a range of roughly five metres and centimetre-level positional accuracy.

Challenge

Presence and position sensing in rooms is usually solved with cameras, which immediately creates a privacy problem in exactly the places where the information is most useful — care rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, and areas around machinery. Simple motion detectors avoid the privacy issue but cannot tell where a person is, whether they are standing or on the floor, or whether anyone is still present once movement stops.

Solution

We developed the sensor end to end: radar front end, custom electronics, embedded firmware and the processing that turns raw reflections into tracked 3D positions. No camera and no image ever exists, so the privacy question disappears by design rather than by policy. The device reports positions over standard interfaces, which lets it feed an automation system, an alarm, or a dashboard.

Outcome

The result is a sensor that answers questions a motion detector cannot — how many people are in the room, where, and at what height — in situations where a camera would never be accepted. It is the basis for applications from fall and presence detection in care settings to occupancy and safety around equipment.
